Hey everyone,
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Kimberly Jones, the North Carolina Teacher of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year. During our conversation, Kimberly shared her background and the influential people in her life who helped shape her into the educator she is today.
Kimberly's mother was her first teacher and fostered her love for learning. Her mentor, Derek Curran, saw potential in her and took her to Europe to give her a stronger foundation for her scholarship interviews. Lastly, her graduate program advisor, Dr. Joseph Milner, saw something unique in how she saw the world and validated her voice and perspective. These influential people in her life helped shape her into the educator she is today.
Despite not always wanting to be a teacher, Kimberly now believes in the transformative power of education and the impact it can have on students' lives. She also addresses some common myths surrounding education and teaching, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the value of education and the role of teachers in shaping the future of society.
Kimberly also discusses the challenges of implementing new curriculums and the importance of diversity in the teaching profession. She highlights the need for students to see themselves reflected in their teachers and the curriculum.
Overall, Kimberly's words of wisdom for fellow and aspiring educators emphasize the gift of teaching and the impact that educators can have on their students' lives. She encourages educators to affirm their students and help them see themselves in a positive light.
