[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Work It, Live it, Own it, The Place To Be If You Are Business Owner Who Was

[00:00:11] [SPEAKER_00]: fire and stories to create life, business harmony.

[00:00:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back to Work It, Live It, Own It, The podcast where business owners take charge of their

[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_00]: lives and businesses. This is the Cola Lair, Your Hostess, and today we're diving into a topic

[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_00]: that hits close to home for so many of us. And that is the shame of the side hustle.

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why I wanted to have this conversation with you all is because I'm about to be

[00:00:40] [SPEAKER_00]: a guest on another podcast called The Seemic Route, What Jennifer Walter. And we're going to dive

[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_00]: into this topic about the shame of the side hustle. Why is there such a stigma against the side hustle?

[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to dive into that today and bottom line guys, there's absolutely nothing

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_00]: to be shameful about. So my question to you is have you ever felt judged for having a side hustle?

[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Think of back to when you first started your business. Maybe you're still a dual career person.

[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_00]: You have a nine to five, but you also have your side hustle. Maybe you've heard comments like,

[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_00]: isn't your full-time job enough? Or when are you going to get serious about your career?

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_00]: If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Because today we're going to be breaking down all of that.

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to dismantle all of that, but we're also going to be celebrating the courage

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_00]: that it takes to pursue the side hustle. We're also going to explore why some people look

[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_00]: down on side hustles, how to reframe the narrative and share practical tips for balancing your

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_00]: full-time job with your passion project. Plus I'm going to share with you some stories of

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_00]: successful side hustleers who turn their part-time gigs into full-time successes. So whether

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: you're driving to work? When you're lunch break or you're winding down for the evening, stay tuned

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: for an empowering conversation that's all about embracing your entrepreneurial spirit. Let's start

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_00]: with the reality of side hustles. Why do so many people start them? Well, for some is a financial

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: necessity. Extra income to pay off debt. Save for the future or simply make end meet. And for others

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_00]: is a chance to pursue a passion project, develop new skills or test the waters of entrepreneurship

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_00]: without quitting their day job. Now some studies show that nearly 45% of Americans have a side

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: hustle and that's almost half of the working population. I know as an educator, a lot of educators

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_00]: have side hustles and it's not just about making extra money. The side hustles actually provide

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: a sense of fulfillment and purpose that might be missing from a full-time job. So let's have an example.

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I know personally of someone, let's call her Jasmine. And by day she has a full-time job,

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: she's a single parent, but by night she is the owner of a successful Etsy shop selling handmade

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: jewelry. What started out as a hobby turned into a thriving business, bringing in additional income,

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_00]: string and a creative outlet for Jasmine that she loves. Now let's dive into the stigma and its

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_00]: origins. And I know you may say, I don't care what other people think and just stick, stick with me here.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Hang on, okay? Why is there a stigma around side hustles? Well for some people who hold traditional

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_00]: views on work, believe that a stable full-time job should be enough. While others might feel jealous or threatened

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_00]: by the ambition and drive aside hustlers, unless not forget the societal pressures to have it all

[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: together with a single well-paying job. This stigma can be damaging, leading to feelings of shame

[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_00]: and inadequacy. And it can make side hustlers feel like their efforts are trivial,

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_00]: or that they're somehow failing because they need or want more than just their full-time job.

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Hang on guys, let's switch it up. Let's flip the squint a little bit. Let's reframe this narrative

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_00]: because it's time to. So instead of viewing side hustles,

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_00]: of viewing people who take the initiative to start side hustles as a sign of instability or desperation,

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_00]: let's see it as what it truly is. Acts of courage and ambition. Side hustles offer numerous

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: benefits, additional income, personal growth, and opportunities to network and learn.

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_00]: There are way to explore passions and build skills that may not be utilized on a full-time job.

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_00]: So the next time someone asks, York, or you or someone you know questions about your side hustle,

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_00]: proudly explain how it's a strategic move for your future. Share how it's helping you achieve

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: your goals, whether that's financial independence, career advancement, or personal fulfillment.

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, that me break this down and give you some practical advice for all my dual career people out

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_00]: there. For all my side hustles out there, let's get practical for a minute, balancing a full-time job

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_00]: and a side hustle can have as challenges but it's definitely possible with the right strategies.

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_00]: As a matter of fact, I wrote a workbook called Work at Live It Owned It and how dual career people

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: can be prone to success. And it's great because one of the acronyms that I use is a P in prone to success

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_00]: and that is to prioritize, you've got to prioritize your time, you've got to set specific hours

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_00]: for your side hustle and stick to them. And this helps you maintain a healthy work life situation.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't like to say balance because we're never off-kilter, but I want you to come at your life

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_00]: from a whole human approach and ensure that you don't burn out and matter of fact one of the

[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_00]: episodes I'm going to talk about in the next episode is going to be fired up but not burned out.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: The next thing I want you guys to take to heart is to stay organized use tools like planters,

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_00]: apps, your phone calendar, our project management software to keep track of your tasks and

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_00]: your deadlines. And this will help you stay on top of both your job and your side hustle without

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: feeling overwhelmed. A lot of people ask me they were like how in the world do you work still

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_00]: work a full-time job? And you run a business and you do podcasting. I don't see how you do it all.

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_00]: And I explain to them number one, I don't take on more clients than I can take on. I know my band

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_00]: with and number two when I do podcasting whether it's just a solo episode like this one or I have

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: guessed on, I schedule them, I have a calendar and that works within my schedule and my time frame.

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And I have a job that allows me the flexibility or breaks throughout the year where I can do

[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_00]: batch recordings and batch conversations so I can schedule those out throughout the year.

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_00]: So scheduling and staying organized is key. Next don't forget the legal and financial aspects.

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I want you to make sure that you are aware of any licenses or permits that you need and keep track

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_00]: of your income in your expenses and tax purposes. And if you have questions about that,

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_00]: I suggest that if you're in the United States talk to the Secretary of State,

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: your city, local town or city and see what licenses or permits you may need.

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_00]: And there's also a sort of apps out there that you can use to help you keep track

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_00]: of your mileage if you're using your car as an expense is a right off for your mileage when you're

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_00]: driving around in your car or for other texts expenses. Next I want to talk about some empowering

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_00]: stories so to wrap up our discussion today, I want to share with you a successful side

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_00]: hustler that I personally know. Now I interviewed John A Walker season one. It was an episode

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_00]: about selling with integrity and I'll leave the link down in the description to our episode so

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_00]: you can hear that in further detail. Now John A Walker has been in the pharmaceutical sales industry

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: for over two decades and she went from being a pharmaceutical sales rep to now wear on her job,

[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_00]: she coaches others to do the same thing. She mentors them. But doing this process, her

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_00]: day job, her full-time job allowed her to open up a side business to wear, she took all the

[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_00]: sales strategies that were authentic and genuine to her so she could remain true to herself

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_00]: and now she teaches other business owners how to sell with integrity, how to have a

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_00]: sales strategy or marketing system with ease and flow. Next up, I have another one, Jessica,

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_00]: who's in the UK. She has her own nine to five but she loves to travel and so she started out

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_00]: writing travel blogs and writing about her expenses, her experiences and things even when it

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_00]: comes to traveling alone and what bests like and she's been able to create a wonderful side

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_00]: hustle just talking about her travels and giving insights, on places to go and visit, especially

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_00]: if you want to travel alone or with your friends. And then there's you, you are your own success story.

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_00]: If you have the determination in the right mindset, a side hustle can lead to incredible

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_00]: opportunities and personal growth for you. Allow your story to be your own success story. All right,

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_00]: so as we conclude today's episode I want you to remember this, your side hustle is a testament to

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_00]: your ambition, creativity and drive. Don't let anyone make you feel ashamed of your hustle,

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_00]: embrace it, celebrate it and use it as a stepping stone to your dreams.

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_00]: job and your side hustle. Thank you for joining me on Work It Live It Own It. If this episode has brought
